SILS-MARIA TO PONTRESINA

23km   1116m+/1156m-
Stage 6 makes a straight up start from Sils-Maria through the forest. A long traverse looks down on the blue Silvaplanersee below and wraps beneath the point of Piz Corvatsch. The climb to Fuorcla Surlej gets steeper passing under the Murtèl lift infrastructure. From the busy pass, the trail angles toward Chamanna Coaz, but cuts toward Roseg after the first switchbacks. It’s a gradual downhill out of the idyllic Val Roseg along a popular path, and smooth running all the way into Pontresina.

Eat:
  • If you somehow left Sils-Maria hungry, the Berghaus Fuorcla Surlej is on the pass at the end of the uphill. Or if you really like eating at mountain huts, the Chamanna Coaz is a detour further into the Val Roseg, but a good way to make the day longer and another slice of pie more necessary.
  • You'll find everything you need in Pontresina.
HIGHLIGHT:

Piz Bernina (4049m) the Alps' easternmost 4000 meter peak in full view

Sleep:

Pontresina

After rolling over the Surlej Pass, the landscape turns a lot more dramatic with views of the Piz Bernina, the Alps' easternmost 4000 meter peak

Image

Beginning the descent to the Rosegtal will have you tripping over just about everything as you take in the view

Image

Thankfully, at times there is little to trip over

High above the Rosegtal and far below the high peaks

Once in the Rosegtal, a long cruise out low angled, smooth terrain leads all the way to Pontresina
