We actually never intended, or even thought, to add this Gimmelwald trail run to Elevation. But, after doing it numerous times this summer because it is just so perfect and easy, we realized that Elevation needs runs like this. For people visiting Switzerland, Gimmelwald is a place you must visit. For trail runners visiting Switzerland, you may as well go for a run.
We start the run in Gimmelwald itself, which sits above Lauterbrunnen Valley and requires a short tram ride from Stechelberg, at the end of Lauterbrunnen. It's the same tram that goes to Mürren, and beyond to the Schilthorn (a Way Up). If you arrived to Lauterbrunnen by train, you'll need to change to the Stechelberg bus and get out at the tram station. If you arrived by car, drive to and park at the tram station.
With the exception of the steeper parts of the climbs, this route is almost entirely running. But, you'll surely hit the pause button throughout to take in views of the Jungfrau, and the surprising star of the tour, the Gspaltenhorn, who's north face is equally as high and menacing as the Eiger.
The tour is equally as good in either direction, take your pick.
While in the Jungfrau Region, you have a huge amount of some of the best trail running in the Alps as options, be sure to visit our Jungfrau Region Collection for more to do.

TIPS
-
Study the map! There are countless ways to make this loop bigger, or even smaller - and they are all good.

Hello,
I appreciate this information, my husband and I would be traveling from USA to Switzerland, we would love to make this Gimmelwald Trail Run or the Oeschinensee hike. We only want to make sure that on May 1st considering the weather and what recommendations could you give to us?
Thanks,
Best Regards,
May 1 is most likely going to be too early. This year there is very little snow so there is a chance some of the route will work, but on a normal snow year it would be a pretty unpleasant walk or run. It’s too early to say what it will do this season.
